Galentine’s Day

“What’s Galentine’s Day? It’s only the best day of the year.” Celebrated every year on February 13th, this Valentine’s eve holiday was created by the popular sitcom, Parks and Recreation. Leslie Knope, played by the established actress Amy Poehler, shares the meaning of this holiday while spending time with her friends.

  • This is the perfect day to gather your girls and spend the day together. Get the best food and wine, and host fun activities that will make Galentine’s Day unforgettable!
  • Give your favorite women something special, like a monogrammed gift or zodiac candle and glass. Custom gifts are a great way celebrate your best friend, sister, and mom and this fun women’s holiday.
  • Plan an exciting girl’s night out! Dress in your best attire, order your favorite cocktail, and celebrate being a woman.
  • Plan a lunch date with your work gal pals. Show your boss and coworkers that they make a difference. Share stories of each others’ success over a rewarding lunch at your favorite spot.
  • Host a Galentine’s Day party. February 13th is the best time to watch the infamous Parks and Rec episode that inspired this holiday. Cozy up pajamas, break out the nail polish, facemasks, wine and everything else that makes you feel pampered.

International Women’s Day

The origin of International Women’s Day dates back to as early as 1909. Women who were involved in the socialist party of America celebrated “National Women’s Day” to honor the worker’s strike of 1908 in New York, where women protested inhumane working conditions. This women’s holiday emerged at the turn of the 20th century from activities of labor movements in North America and Europe. It took 66 years after the first celebration for this day to be internationally recognized as a holiday by the United Nations.

For International Women’s Day, you are asked to wear purple, which symbolizes dignity and justice. Wondering how to celebrate? Here are a few stand out ideas on how to spend the day, while supporting what it stands for.

  • Post on social media about all the women who matter in your life. You can share why they are so important to you and share your favorite photo of you both of you. Be sure to tag each woman you mention!
  • Call out an accomplishment of a woman in your life and mention the hashtag #InternationalWomensDay. It is always a fabulous feeling to be recognized for your hard work, and there’s not a day more fitting to spotlight an accomplished lady in your life!
  • International Women’s Day encompasses girl power. The perfect gift should inspire and motivate your best friends, coworkers, teachers and all the women you care about. Need a gift idea? A motivational poster will act as an encouraging reminder at her office or home.

National Girlfriend’s Day

Contrary to popular belief, this women’s holiday was not created by girlfriends. Launched as a promotional tool, National Girlfriend’s Day was created for a book by a mother-daughter duo, Kathleen Laing and Elizabeth Butterfield. Their book titled “Girlfriends Getaway,” launched what would become a nationally recognized holiday in 2002.

While Girlfriend’s Day was created with a different intention in mind, this day is meant for showing appreciation for gal pals.

  • Nothing says “I got you,” quite like buying your work ladies a coffee and leaving it on their desks with a thoughtful note.
  • Play hostess and throw a girl’s movie day! Watch classics that showcase what it means to be a girlfriend like Thelma and Louise and a League of Their Own.
  • Throwback to your childhood and give your girls matching gifts! Customize a keychain so your girls can carry around a token of your friendship.

Women’s Equality Day

Out of all the holidays that honor women, this may be the one that holds the most importance. In 1973, republican Bella Abzug of congress, designated August 26th as “Women’s Equality Day.” This special day was selected to commemorate the certification of the 19th amendment to the constitution, which granted women the right to vote alongside men in 1920. This day not only memorializes this significant doctrine but observes women’s continuing efforts towards full equality.

Don’t let an important day like this go uncelebrated! Designate Women’s Equality Day to fun, inspiring and educational activities. Here are a few ideas:

  • Set up a watch party for movies based on the women’s suffrage movement or movies that star an inspiring female lead.
  • Get your girlfriends together and volunteer at an organization that supports women. For example, Women for Women International is a non-profit dedicated to helping marginalized women all over the world.
  • Honor this day by creating and decorating your very own vision board! Visualize your dreams, goals, and aspirations, and create a collage to represent them.
